'TIMELINE' EXHIBITION

The Visual Communication Design (DKV) Study Program at ISI Yogyakarta has been established since 1950 with the name REDIG (Reklame Dekorasi Ilustrasi Grafik) department at first. This department has undergone several name changes from until finally as Visual Communication Design. Originally under the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) until it became part of the Indonesian Institute of Arts Yogyakarta.

During this time, the study program experienced tremendous development under the influence of the people involved in it: lecturers, students and alumni. Many great works on a national or international scale have been produced by lecturers, students and alumni.

'NATIONAL COMIC FESTIVAL 2017' EXHIBITION

Comic media as one end of the creative industry in Indonesia is having a good time. Local comic publications are able to be well absorbed by the market, comic shows in the online version are read by thousands of subscribers, and comic appreciation events such as archival exhibitions and conventions are also attended by tens of thousands of visitors. This shows that the community is basically ready to give high appreciation for comic media, and its development media and its derivatives. It is the comic industry players who should see this high appreciation by producing the best comic works accompanied by appropriate marketing methods.

The Visual Communication Design Study Program as a pioneer in Comics courses, some of its graduates and even students have become professional comic artists and received good recognition from various events. Both local, national, and international. For example, the Kosasih Award, awarded the Best Campus Comic to the comic by the Final Project of DKV ISI Yogyakarta students for 3 consecutive years. At the same award, students and lecturers were also awarded the same trophy in the Best Short Story and Best Story categories.

Related to this, the DKV Study Program at ISI Yogyakarta once held a National Comics Festival in 2012. The event, which was held at the end of 2012, attracted a lot of interest from people around Yogyakarta and several other cities to come to appreciate comics, at the level of popular media, and also provide new insights, as a result of academic work. Designed as a bi-annual event, the festival is in fact not easy to be held regularly as planned, despite questions, responses, and requests from various parties for the festival to be held again. Therefore, DKV Study Program this time tried to re-organize the National Comic Festival with more emphasis on comic appreciation as a result of academic work.

The National Comics Festival will feature comics exhibitions, seminars, discussions, new book launches, bazaars, and musical performances. The Comics Exhibition will feature an array of academic works, ranging from the results of comics courses, process works, to the final work of student Final Projects. The exhibition will also invite professionals, especially graduates of the DKV ISI Yogyakarta study program and also practitioners in the comics industry. Seminars try to present speakers who have an interest in comic studies and actors in the comic industry. Discussions provide space for students, and young comic artists to discuss their work, including launching their own comics. Bazaars are held to accommodate the efforts of comic collectives and or publishers in marketing their comics. Often in bazaars, you will find comic works that do not enter bookstores, but have a quality that is no less good.

The entire National Comic Festival is also a form of accountability for the Visual Communication Design Study Program at ISI Yogyakarta in carrying out its mission, and achieving its vision in producing visual communication design works that are useful for the community. In addition, through the works presented, the academic and general public can see and appreciate the output and attention of the DKV ISI Yogyakarta Study Program to comic media.
